I recently aquired a 1986 Z that had been sitting for over a period of 18 months after having the Timing belt replaced. Other replacements include a new alternator. I believe the fuel injection recall work has been done, prior.

My question, is this my Oil gauge was reading Zero, when driving, and when not in motion the gauge was slightly off of the Zero. I called a friend whom recommended that I immediately put some oil in the engine. The dip stick was showing some oil on it, right about the "L" slightly in the middle. However, after putting in the 1st quart, I got a reading better than before if I had to guess I would say that it registered 15 (on the gauge) I went ahead and put in half of another quart. and it would be about 20 (on the gauge) . The dip stick reading is on the "H" now. What should the gauge be reading? I believe it is working, other wise it would not have registered anything.

z31 OPSUs are notorious for going bad and giving all sorts of funky readings. Replace it if you want, but as long as you don't hear clacking of the valves, I'd almost say don't worry about it. Just check your oil level every once in a while.
