Right passenger window
On my 86 n/a 300zx, the passenger window control switch doesn't work. It tries but barely moves the window up or down. My driver side switch will move the passenger window up. So I go to the junkyard and get me a replacement switch that I put on and it doesnt work. So is it the motor that powers the window up that needs to be replaced and not the switch? Where is the motor for the window on the passenger side anyway? I normally go to the libraray to grab a book but its checked out and you guys are smarter anyway. Please let me know what you think? thanks fudabuda

If the window moves, the switch is good. Since it is really slow, something is either causing it to stick, or your motor is really worn out.
What book do you get from the library? Buy the Haynes manual for ~ $13. and be done with it. You can keep an eye out for an FSM on e-bay if you want to get a great diagmostic book. The Haynes manual has much better step by step instructions for removing and replacing parts. FSM has details on how to test key sensors and stuff.
...and from the ashes shall rise a new hope. And it shall be known as "Z". And it will be good.

Re: Right passenger window
It's a Chilton book. It wasnt too bad but I have heard that Haynes is the best. Besides everybody on the boards seems to mention it all the time. I would love to get a FSM but I think they go for 70.00 it seems. I would love to just look at one to see what all the excitement is. I'm still learning and finding out where things are, so everything is "good". Thanks for the info

i think the fsm's on ce (available at zcarcreations.com) is a little less than the paper version. and you can print and reprint pages from it as needed. They don't have all years yet, but they do have the '84, '86, '87 ones (and maybe other since I last checked).
i would lube all the sliding portions with some good teflon spray (NOT WD-40 WHICH WON'T LAST!), and if that doesnt help, try a new window motor.

Thanks spot your advise is always helpful. I should point out that I paid my mechanic 65.00 to find a short in car and he told me my manifold fan was staying on and that he shut it off and the problem should go away; well it didn't. The parking lights kept coming on unexpectedly. So everyones advice helped me figure out to replace the light switch and your advice about taking off the steering wheel really saved me some time and money. Needless to say everything works great and the lights don't drain my battery anymore. Now I need a new autoclub. ;0) Fudabuda

heh, silly mechanic....
I'm sure he "meant" well though. There is a timer for the injector fan, it may be that yours has gone out if it stays on. It's located on the drivers side, in a cubbyhole. if you open the door, and remove the vent thing on the doorjamb (below the striker) you 'might' be able to get to it and remove it that way. Otherwise you need to remove the plastic piece that goes around/over the rear shock tower. the timer is in a hole which is below the cubbyhole where the seat belt goes. but if that didnt turn out to be the problem, then i guess it doesn't really matter anyway.
At least that's where it is on 84-6 Z's, i imagine they wouldnt have moved it for later years though.

Re: Right passenger window
You know I went to the local pick a part and I had such a hard time trying to get at the window motor that some guy came over and gave me his. He gave me his because the motor and the gears(if im saying it right) were still hooked to the window arms. He simply ripped it out because he was so frustrated in gettting to the motor. Anyway he said that the screws were on there pretty tight and if I had a good screw driver I could have the motor. I said thanks and went to the window and the guy was going to charge me for having the broken window arms still attached to the motor. But with just the motor and gear(funny circular looking thing attached to the motor) it would have been ten dollars cheaper. So to make this long story short, I couldnt get the screws off, was frustrated and left empty handed. I called places that take the part off for you and they came up with fifty to seventy-five dollars."Too much."
Anyway the question is, are there some ways to take those three screws off, do I need to add some powder(because the screws were kinda oily and the screwdriver was slipping off) to get some sort hold on it. Do you guys have this problem when taking the window motor out. Anyway the plan is to get the motor, put it in, spray some teflon on the moving parts and move on to the next problem. Some old guy there said that the gears were probably stripped on my window and that's why the motor couldn't push the window up. ..nuff said Fuda

Re: Right passenger window
I usually just buy the motor with the arm thing attached. easy way to get the screws off though, is to use a ratchet with a 1/4" socket and large phillips bit.
That happens to be the screw on the plenum cover plate, but should work fine on any screw.

Ofcourse! Ofcourse! Thank you so much. Spot go to the local community college and teach" How to restore your Z." You should get paid for this stuff. Thanks, I'll let you know when this mini project is done. Thanks Fuda
