Screeching noise
While driving my Z I heard a loud screeching noise from the engine and some white smoke rose from the hood. The engine appeared to cease. After a while when re -started , the engine ran fine. What gives here?
Is the belts being too loose?

check your fluids and make sure they all look normal. if oil is milky looking then you may have a small head gasket leak and gotten coolant into it. If so, then do NOT drive the car until it's repaired.
what do you mean "appeared to cease"? do you mean seize? if it seized then it would not have restarted. if cease, then you mean it appeared to just stop running or did it actually stop running? Sorry to be picky but it might make a difference. I would be hesitant to drive the car until you find out what the problem is. Otherwise you may make things worse (or non-fixable...).

If it didnt leave any clues behind then the problem will be hard to find. Try making it happen again but keep an eye on your gauges. This may be a detrimental thing to do though so proceed with caution.... Make sure all your fluids are good first and be ready to jump out and pop the hood real quick or it'll leave you baffled again.

Re: Screeching noise
Hey bugs - it turns out that it was the pulley over the water pump that seized. I guess need a pump now. that explains the overheating. Was able to lossin somewhat but did appear to be sticking inside the pump housing. probalbly also explains the noise coming from the pump.

Yep, sounds like Jeff87nt kinda stuff. I wouldn't have to look in this case though. Sounded a lot like my 280 when the pulley seized but I had more smoke and the first thing I saw and smelled when I opened the hood was melted rubber. It was a dead giveaway. Sometimes a little scary to pull the latch and raise that hood The more I learn about cars the less I desire I have to learn more, lol.

Re: Screeching noise
Well folks, i'm in for it now. Removed the belts, pulleys, timing belt covers. The water pump we think seized and thats where the noise came from and overheating. Thermostat is ok.
Timing belt looks fine, no cracks, defined teeth. I hope taking off the crankshaft pulleys don't affect the timing.
Anyother suggestions on what to replace now that I'm this far? Thinking of repacing oil seals.
