Stripped Bolt Removal (...and worse...)
Hey there ZedHeads... I have both radiator cap fasteners with snapped-off heads, and I have never removed a stripped bolt before. I went out to the hardware store and picked up an Irwin 8/32nc and a Century 7/64 drill bits, both of which are guesses because I can't figure metric to imperial conversion.
The long story is I overheated my 87 z31( (nonturbo) and had white smoke thru my A/C vents, out the hood, exhaust, etc., which I limped close to 90 miles in 85* heat to a mechanic, limped it home again from the mechanic after he told me it would be 4 grand to fix it. It still runs, and I hate to say, not terribly bad. It overheats pretty quickly, and it has tremendously reduced power. I know I need to pretty much take it apart to hope to fix it and I don't feel I have the technical savvy to do that alone, nor do I have the savings to pay a professional team to fix it. If you guys honestly feel like this is the end of the line for my Z journey, I'll trust you. I am just so stubborn and want this car to run! It was a blast to drive while I had it and giving it up is not an easy thing.
I know these are the things that must be repaired or replaced:
Thermostat, water pump, timing belt, radiator cap, possibly coolant tubes
What I don't know how to diagnose; is how warped the headers/gaskets are, and if the engine block itself is warped or cracked.
Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
