t-top locks frozen
i just bought an 87 z31n/a and love it. its in great shape with 150k. i havent had any problems yet except the t-top locks dont unlock. i tried having a new key made, and spraying wd-40 in them but they wont budge. im going to try to take them apart and check the mechanism but havent had time yet. just curious if anyone has had similar problems and what might work.
thanks

Had the same exact problem on my 87. Someone had put the buttons on upside down. When you push the button up you should see orange near the bottom indicating its ready to be unlocked. Then just stick the key in with the button up and turn it. Let me know how it goes.

gave that a try but no luck. was there a seperate key for the t tops? i thought the one key worked for everything.... the owners manual (yep, still got it!!!) isnt very clear on that and the people i bought it from had only the one key and said it worked on every lock. hope i dont have to go to a locksmith but its getting sunny in sand diego and i want them off.

thanks zbum. i thought that was the case, so im wondering if i got the damn valet key. the passenger side one did come unlocked but it took about 15 minutes of jiggling. the key i have also hasnt worked in the trunk, glove box, or passenger side door. i thought this was because they just got old and froze up but it must be the frigging valet key. any ideas on how to confirm this and how to get the right key made without spending a ton? thanks again.

thanks again zbum. this is starting to bug me. i wish i could get the plastic trim off the thing while its on the car so i could check the mechanism. by the way, where did you find those key blanks? ive got some crappy generic key and would love original z keys.

The original 300ZX keys are generic and crappy looking. Those keys came with the Z32 models. They will fit just about any Nissan car though.
part numbers are:
regular:
KEY00-00095
valet:
KEY00-00096
There are a number of people on ebay selling them regularly for more than you can buy them for at the dealerships.
