What is best 17 or 18 inch wheels?
Hi
I own a 1986 300ZX (non-turbo) and I'm looking at getting some wheels soon. I'm debating on getting either some 17 or 18 inch wheels. I've read that the bigger the wheel the better the handling but the ride suffers. I'm also concerned about the looks and wondering if the 18 inch wheels are just to large and won't look good on my Z. Any comments on tire sizes & manufactures or wheel brands & styles would be helpful also, thanks.

Personally I'd stick with 17". Otherwise one good pothole can easily waste your wheel. I have heard others say they've gone back to 17 after having 18 cause the ride was just too harsh. If your goal is better handling, also try polyurethane sway bar bushings. They'll make a big difference.

"Also remember larger diameter wheels decrease your acceleration."
Not always. A few things factor into acceleration. Weight. Outside diameter. Sidewall flex. Tire grip.
Given the same outside diameter, the larger wheels MAY or MAY NOT decrease your 1/4 mile times. But, if the outside diameter stays the same, but the weight of the wheels/tires combo is reduced, you may actually get better times. It's all a matter of hooking up.
It's also advisable to keep as close to original outside diameter as possible. This does a number of things. It keeps your speedometer accurate is the most important.
But saying that increasing the wheel diameter makes you slower is false.
