heater core bypass????

heater core bypass????
ok.... so my heater is quote unquote... stuck on. It appears that the heater core bypass valve (of which I will take pictures of in a minute) is stuck open. I'm really not sure if this is the right term for it but it seems to be what it does. Because of this there is always HOT HOT HOT air coming out of my a/c vents (no good when its 90+ outside).
I ziptied a little arm on it closed and it went away. Unfortunately if I close it the car will get really hot (coolant temp) after an hour of driving or so. I think it might be acting as a second radiator. Possibly my fans or radiator would need to be replaced.
DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE WITH THIS? I'm curious why this part wouldn't close! Dont know if its vacume pressure that should close it or what (kinda looks that way.... I HAVE A DIGITAL CLIMATE CONTROL). Anyone know what I should look to replace so my a/c can work again (when i close the valve the a/c blows cold.... oh sweet cold air).
Anyone know what might be causing my engine to overheat?
Thanx so much,
Austin

You have a vacuum leak, somewhere. Maybe multiple leaks and not necessarily at the device that won't function properly. The lack of vacuum is likely the cause of the malfunction(s), but that doesn't mean the leak is in the line attached to the device. Low vacuum has been known to cause some of the little vent doors under the dash to open, or close during acceleration preventing the A/C from blowing into the cabin.
The heater valve should be closing when the heat is in the off position on the dash controls, if there is enough vacuum to move it.
Your best bet is to start replacing vacuum lines. I don't think there is a write up telling a person how much of which sizes will be needed. Just give it your best guesstimate, go get some hose, and start replacing. If you don't want to make more than one trip to the parts store, then buy spools, or, do the work in the store parking lot so you'll have access to all you need.
Overheating? Who knows? Radiator, if never replaced, is likely clogged. Could have a little air in the system, or, a bad pressure cap. Does it overheat while at cruising speed, at idle, or, all the time?
