just replaced alternator when a "pop" after correctly hooking up battery
I had just replaced a new 91 maxima alternator in my turbo z, when I heard a "pop" after connecting the neg. terminal to the battery. The positive terminal was already connected. I dont know if this "pop" is related to the alternator install i just did....the only thing I could think of is... did I mix up the ground to the alternator= skinny black wire...right? with the harness wire that connects to the "batt" on the alternator
I'm 100% positive there was no reversed polarity of the battery.
all fusible links=good
all fuses in fuse block=good
only 2 inline fuses i have=good
I did not start the car yet...too scared
the thing I did notice is that the antenna motor did not activate which usually does when I reconnect the battery.
No smoke or burn smell from engine bay...any ideas where the "pop" came from

I have had this happen a few times with my 280zx. Yes I would say your alternator wires are hooked up wrong. Make sure and double check those. Before you hook the battery back up. Or try to start the car. And when it happened to me the last time. I fried the alternator.

it happened late last night...so far all I know is that I have lights to the interior passenger door. I'll check to see if I 've got power to the horn.
I disconnect the neg terminal again and I'm super hesitant to hook it back up.
Like I mentioned the radio antenna motor did not activate which usually does whenever I've reconnected the battery...any thoughts?
thanks

OK the car is up and running with no problems
The weird thing is the head lights were flipping up when turned on... which it shouldnt because the harness was disconnected to give me the sleeper look. I tested it 3-4 times and they kept flipping up.
but the next day it went back to the "normal" sleeper position, but the now the warning light for the lights comes up... but fades away in 1-2 minutes.
I replaced the brown and black relays for the head lights
so my questions are:
1. can a "pop" sound come from a relay?
2. is the relay at fault?
thanks
