Valve Train "Carbon"

Hey guys, haven't been on the forums in a while. Recently did a timing belt replacement along with water pump and tensioner as all of ya suggested I do. It all went smoothly despite a coolant leak, but I am concerned because I took off both valve covers to do the cam seals and my left valve cover (when looking from the front) and valve train was covered in black "carbon". Whereas the other side looked brand new. It did not appear to be sludge, but a very dry black layer covering everything. Should I worry about this? I just think its weird to be on one side. I replaced the pcv just for the sake if it, but please let me get your opinions. Thanks!
