Suspension upgrade

I have a 91 300ZX TT and I wanted to upgrade the F&R suspension. Will I be able to use a non-adjustable shocks on my car since it came with adjustable susupension. I have the KYB GR2 Gas shocks in mind. Will this work or do I have to get the adjustable version?

You can use any shock, whether it's adjustable or not, but the GR2 shocks aren't considered to be very good. Most people (myself included) recommend KYB AGX (which are adjustable), Tokico Illumina (also adjustable), or Tokico Premium Performance (non-adjustable).

Whats wrong with the GR2 shocks? I have the KYB AGX on my Trans Am. It works good but its a PITA sometimes to adjust it because I have to crawl or lay on the ground to adjust and to see the numbers on the dial. I think Tokico would be a better choice since it can be adjusted on top.

Have fun removing ALL of the rear interior panels to adjust the rear shocks with Tokico Illumina (FWIW, I have Illumina up front, but I won't put them in back for that reason... when my stock rear shocks die, they'll be swapped for AGX). And if you said you don't want adjustment anyway, why not just get adjustable ones and leave them alone on whatever setting you're happy with?

As for GR2, most complain that they are simply too stiff (and there is such a thing as too stiff... a well tuned suspension will have some travel). The general consensus (at least on TT.NET from what I've seen) is that stock shocks are superior than GR2's, and that AGX (and Tokico Illumina to a lesser extent) are the generally accepted best replacement. Also, the GR2s aren't meant to ever be lowered, so if you intend on lowering the car, it'll only make the ride worse (if that matters to you... it does to me, because my car is lowered about 1.5").

i'll 2nd putting the AGX in back if you want adjustable. lying on the ground is much easier than pulling out the hatch interior, or i guess you could drill ugly holes. i dont have the AGXs personally, but i have driven a car with them, and eibach springs, and it felt pretty damn good compared to stock.

and thread belongs in the brakes/wheels/suspention/chassis section. moved.

Guys, ****, he flat out said in the first post that he wasn't looking for an adjustable suspension... I threw out the Illumina and AGX as better alternatives to the GR2, which are unfavorable for the 300ZX.

oldschool - I said in my first response that the Tokico Premium shocks (aka HP Premium) are a good alternative.

Thanks for the advice guys.
ZLover4Life- I'm going for the Tokico premiums like you said. I just won the bid on ebay for a set(4) Tokico premiums for $232.00 I can't wait to get it together with my Eibach springs.

If you do it right

You can make removable covers so you can get to the adjustments on the top from the interior, I did it with a Dremel and for covers I used plastic faucet hole covers that can easily be popped on or off for adjustments. The trick is to measure where to cut the hole for them extreemely well before actually cutting the interior panel. You can get the covers in the plumbing isle of a Lowes or Home Depot for about 2$ each. The Dremel or Rotozip is slightly more. ( I went with Coil overs for a completely different feel)
