Blown Turbo?

Hey guys I hope you can shed some light on this for me. I have an automatic 92 300zx TT and was driving on the freeway at about 60 then hit the gas to pass some people and I think it may have down shifted from overdrive (4th) to second, it started to accelerate quickly like normal then slowed way down, and was shooting TONS of white smoke. The engine sounded like it was running fine but the gas had a weak response after that (I drove it home slowly about 2 miles blinding everyone behind me) and it sounded like one of the turbos was spooling properly but the other sounded like a chunk of something was clinking around when I hit the gas. Temperature stayed normal the whole time.

After parking it all of the oil went out of the side mount intercooler on the passenger side and there was wet oil around the inside of my exhaust tips.

Is it a head gasket? Turbo? Valves? Any idea on the best way to determine what is actually broken? I've seen youtube videos of blown turbos that blow smoke like my car is but they make a loud "dentist drill" noise that I dont hear from my car, I can barely hear my turbo(s) at all now.

Secondly, if it is the turbo, what kind of replacement turbos would you recommend? If I am going to spend $1000+ I might as well upgrade them so let me know what you think would be the best bang for the buck.

If the engine itself was running fine, it's the turbo. If you blew a head gasket that badly, the engine would run like **** or not at all.

And do your research - you cannot bolt on any aftermarket turbos without many supporting mods (intake, full exhaust, ecu, injectors, clutch, etc... what I've just listed isn't everything and it's already an extra ~$2k+). Going without these mods will either damage your new turbos (by choking them, forcing them to work extra hard), or you engine.

Thank you for the response

Here are the mods I have done so far - Stillen H-flo Intake, Z1 Stainless Steel Twin Turbo Testpipes, Mishimoto Z32 TT performance Radiator, Greddy Profec B Spec2 Boost Controller, AMS lightweight pulley set, Chrome TT intake hard pipes & SSQV BOV's, HKS Hiper Exhaust System, AMZ stainless steel Divorced Downpipes, Greddy Turbo Timer with Harness, Z1 Mototsports ECU upgrade, Nismo 555cc Fuel Injector kit

It's an automatic so there is no clutch. What else would you recommend I upgrade before I use after market turbos?

Well for your own sake, you need to get rid of that AMS **** before it destroys your engine somehow.

You could handle a set of Sport 500s or so with your current mods. Get intercoolers (side mounts) and you can do moderate boost (less than 20psi) on larger turbos (GT2530s, for example), but larger turbos usually require 5-bolt downpipes.

And get yourself a real transmission.
