Cheap '91 ZXTT with a bad tranny...

Hello there everyone,

I am currently a Nissan -> Subaru enthusiast... Although my favorite cars ever have to be the Zs. My dream car is a Twin Turbo z32. My first car was a '87 200sx with a VG30e and my second car was a '85 Turbo z31. Now I'm rockin a '97 Subaru Impreza Coupe with a mean little 1.8l pumping about 75whp to the ground lol

I just found a local deal on a 1991 300zxtt. Guy says it has 124,xxx miles on it, there is no 3rd or 4th gear, car has been sitting for a few years, and there is a small amount of back registration... Guy also said that the car starts up fine, but definitely blows smoke. I'm assuming it could be blowing out crap from sitting so long, or the turbos need to be rebuilt?

My biggest concern is the transmission. He apparently sourced a used tranny at a junkyard for $300. But I'm thinking about just rebuilding the original tranny. I have never done transmission work, but I've been told I'm "mechanically inclined"... and I do all my own work on my vehicles as it comes up. So the real question...

How hard is it to rebuild a 5 speed tranny from a '91 TT?

Thanks in advance for your time!

What's he asking? I just picked up. A nice tt for 4g, with upgraded intercoolers and turbos!

depends mostly on what you can buy it for. also seems that z32 turbos go out in the 120 to 140K range. the same as rebuilding any tranny. not a mystery but need to be slow and careful. I wouldn't pay more than 1-1.5K for something in that condition. They are around and they usually aren't that expensive. depends on how well you bargain.

Dont bother rebuilding the transmission.

Do a search on the forum, most wind up failing again.

Assuming its an auto? You can find a cheaper transmission that that.

Where are you from?
