Check your starters guys.
Hi there,
I am new to this forum but it has saved me a bunch of trouble allready.
When I went to start my '96 NA, all I heard was a whining sound, like a small jet engine (or electric motor...hint hint) and the thing didn't turn over. Well I thought maybe it was the starter solenoid but a quick check of the forums told me that these cars have a habit of losing starters. So I knew right away what to look for. I push started the beast and drove it to my folks house and got her up on jack stands and lo and behold, there was the starter hanging by a wire and wedged between the transmission and the exhaust. Unfortunately, the starter housing was broken. The casting had cracked where the top stud goes through it, and the nut was still tight on the stud. The bolt on the bottom however was entirely GONE! I guess that it has happened to a few guys and so I would suggest that everyone check theirs. I had a small warning in the form of two or three times when I went to start it, it ground a little, like when you try to start it when it's allready running. I should have checked it then, but I don't have a place to work on it and I can't get under it without jacking it up. Of Course. Had I checked and seen the problem, I could have just replaced the one bolt and not the whole starter to the tune of $180.00US. Anyway, Heads Up!

Good info....... I generally use loc-tite and a torque wrench on most of my bolts. They never fall out, break or get stripped. I've only learned to do this from experience. Usually hundreds of miles from home. I'm pretty good with EZ-outs and threading taps too.

That why I always like to check the bolts when I'm under there changing the oil.
Pete, where do you live? That condo complex looks very familiar. A friend of mine lived in a unit like those. It was in San Jose off of HWY 87?
