Dead Cylinder

Wtf has been going on, my car has been running like s***, I'm so damn sick of it, ran decently this morning if you dont mention the erratic idle at 1200, on the way home a knocking noise started but by the time I ended up in my garage it was all fine, then 2 hours later started up the car and knocking and weird *** noise starts coming out of the engine bay, Idles at 900 which is unusual bc my car idle so damn high, so I take out my BlaZt software and go one by one turning off each cylinder, then I come to #4 and when I turn it off, nothing happens and the car still runs the same, so I guess its number, but how could it get messed up like that out of no where, God its days like these I jsut want to sell my Z and get a reliable car. Which I think i might do.

your injector might have gone bad. your coil pack, coil pack conector, spark plug. check tehm all. I'd start withthe injector.

congrats you did a cylinder cutout test on your engine.we do them alot on the engines down at the shop ;^) but as bardabe stated check your injector first that is really your best bet. down at the shop 95% of all trucks that have cylinder cutout tests done to them.and have a cylinder showing no response when cutout, end up having a bad injector. gl.

I'm taking the car to the mechanic on monday and have them fix the **** out of it and try selling it, Its too much for me to maintain this car, if I had another daily driver I would keep it but my car was already modded by the previous owner and this thing is not very reliable, I'm sick of worring if my car will start up. I think I might have found a replacement.Link

you think a z is expensive to maintain, look up some of the parts for that bimmer. and if you have to take it to a shop, well......$$$. and the z is prettier anyways.

Go to Advanced, or Auto Zone... Buy a Compression Test Gauge, and test Cylinder Number 4. See what the Compression is compared to the other Cylinders. Like Bardabe said, test the Injectors, Coil Packs, etc.

It shouldn't be that hard to find out what the problem is.

Good luck with it Vladdy

Vlad. Injectors go on these cars all the time. You will be fine driving it to the shop just don't push it to hard. A drive often will even clear the injector problem. i.e. it will begin to fuction again (it will still likely be slightly out of spec and need replacing even if this does happen).
Unless you have replaced injectors recently, I suggest biting the bullet and replacing all 6. When 1 goes, another is not usually too far behind.

As Nismo & Bardabe suggested, test the injectors with an Ohm meter. Another less scientific method to test would be to leave the car idling and begin to remove your coil pack connectors one by one (just pull straight up, they should come off). If the idle noticeably dropped/fluctuates, that one is okay. Replace connector and move on to the next, etc until you pull a connector and you notice no change in idle (that one is the problem).

Hang in there and good luck

Aight so my car will be out of commision until Mon/Tues the guy said the reason my car ran funky and sometimes didnt want to start is some electrical problem where the cylinder didnt get enough voltage to run properly or something like that, he said they have the car apart right now and waiting for replacement parts and will prolly have it put back togather next week. sounds weird.

Vlad, I'm hoping they gave you more specifics than that and you are comfortable with it.
Having the car apart and waiting for replacement parts on an electrical issue sounds weird.

Good luck.

You can both have a nice big glass of shut the hell up. 9 months + for me. That little 12 mile jaunt doesn't count. The closest thing I can think of to compare to that emotional trauma would be paying a hooker $4k and thinking you'll get to do everything and anything you want, but all she ends up doing is kicking you in the *****.

F that.

Wooohooo, got my car back, greatest feeeling ever, its soo much more responsive, all they did is changed an injector and cleaned all the other ones, it still idle a little high 900-1100 but its not as bad as 1500-2000 that it usually did, but the best part is it cost us $0

how did it cost you $0?
if they didn't charge you labor, they shoulda at least charged you for the injector.
how'd you pull that one off??
