Engine pull advice

Engine pull advice
Hey everyone. I've got a 1990 twin turbo and I'm currently in the process of pulling the engine. What a pain in the butt! I've finally got everything undone and ready to come out. I was wondering if it'd be easier to pull the engine and trans together or if I should do it separately? It's a 5 speed if that makes a difference. Thanks for the help!

Pull them separate, it'll be faster and less of a pain. It's almost impossible to try and angle the motor and trans out together from the top. If you want them out as one unit you'll have to drop it from below by removing the power steering rack.

Also I have never once in my many pulls on these motors had an issue pulling BOTH from the top. That's the easiest way to do it. It's makes it a whole lot easier to disconnect and reassemble out of the vehicle on top of that.
I can pull both from the top with no air tools in less than 2 hours.
Pulling them separate makes no sense at all.

Have you ever pulled one? In the z32 unless you have a gigantic extension and air tools or a steady hand to hold the socket in place on the upper bell housing bolts you can't separate in the vehicle. Most likely you will just round off the upper bolts trying to break them loose.

I have done this pull 6 times in the Z32 and once in a J30 in the grass or dirt. I have never heard anyone besides you suggest to pull them separate.
I too do this on the ground with jack stands and an engine hoist. There is no secret, you have to angle the motor up and transmission down and I do this with an engine hoist and a strap around the plenum. Never once has anything got in the way.
Same thing for putting back in. Same angle and then when tranny has cleared firewall you put a floor jack under it to slowly level the the angle as you slide it in.
So much more simple than supporting the tranny under the car and trying to separate while laying on your back. Then trying to spline back up in the same position.

Here is my write up on my TT swap I did and you can see the conditions I pulled my motor in. Also see the motor and tranny still connected during the swap.
