Which is faster...the Z32 or Z33?!?
Hello,
I just wanted to ask you experts the big question of the year...which car is faster: the stock twin turbo 300ZX or the stock 350Z? I'm still undecided which one to purchase, and I want a car that kicks @$$!!!
According to several magazines, the 350Z has faster 0-60 and 1/4 mile times, but I don't know how accurate or reliable they are. My friends, on the other hand, argues that the twin turbo Z is much faster. If you know anything about this, please share it with me. Thanks!

From everything I've seen the Z33 is faster in a straight line and around the track. But the Z32 has more currently available upgrades and with turbos there is a ton of power potential. But the Z32 is heavy and is a maintenance nightmare....if I bought one I'd have to lose the HICAS steering for weight savings and to make it more stable on the track.

Yeah, I thought so too. I still think the Z32's look more stylish and just plan cooler though! Maybe I'll wait for the Z33 to come out with a turbo model and more modifications before I make any final decisions...

Faster Z32 or Z33
Being an owner of a very low mileage 300ZX TT and having twice just driven 350Z's, my seat of the pants speedometer tells me the 300 is MUCH faster accelerating.
Possibly the fact both 350's had very little mileage may have hindered their acceleration. Also the twin turbo rush may just be creating the sensation of speed - but then isn't the sensation what it is all about?
While on the topic, here are my comparisons between the 300TT and the 350;
350 has a better combination of handling/ride. In sport mode, the 300 feels more responsive with higher lateral G's, but the ride quality is too intolerant of unsmooth road surfaces.
The 350 has much better brakes.
The 350 feels much more like sitting in a tub. Don't even consider resting your arm on the window sill.
The 300 has a much more usable designed interior.
The 300 has classical beauty, while the 350 has modern beauty.
The 350 has a little better exhaust sound (my recently installed B&B exhaust took care of that!)
Strangely enough, the 350's had a habit of delayed decceleration that really bothered me and slowed up useful quick downshifting. I haven't seen that even mentioned in any car magazine reviews!
In summary IHO, the new Z needs a shot of adreneline! It is way too heavy feeling. Greater power, without much greater weight, would go a long way in making the 350Z feel more responsive and more fun to drive. In addition to my Z TT, I own a Miata Shinsen Version and a WRX. Having done comparison test drives (on many other sports cars too) the 350Z just isn't as much fun - yet. Hopefuly Nissan will be upgrading the Z soon.

Last I heard you could get factory turbo upgrades for teh 350Z. I could be completely wrong here, but friend of mine who ownes one mentioned something like that.
If you have a look a the figures (I have seen a huge variance in figures for teh 350Z), the 350 does 0-60 (0r 100kph) in 6.5secs whereas the 300zx does it in 6.2.

Wow, thanks for the detailed review Zenith! It definitely helped me consider certain areas of a car that I hadn't thought about before! And I totally agree with you...the 300ZX has a je ne c'est pas classical beauty to it that is just like no other.
And if my sources are correct (Car and Driver and Motor Trend), the 350Z can actually go from 0-60 in 5.42 seconds! That's pretty quick!! And I also read that Greddy came out with a turbo upgrade for the 350Z in an issue of Super Street, which is suppose to boost the car up pass 350 horsepower. But I'm not sure if it's available for the American market yet...

300 or 350???
Well ive heard road and track state that the 350Z does 0-60 in the 5.4-5.5 range and the quarter in the 14.1-14.3 range...... although i have heard th 300 0-60 in around 5.3-5.4 and the quarter anywhere from 13.8-14.1...my car is mostly stock exept for a clutch and an intake.......and i whomped a 350Z by more than 3 car links....driver has a lot to do with it to i would imagine....i love my 300ZX but i do have maintence probs like any car woth 79000 miles on it....much different price range...i payed 10 for mine.....and i think bang for the buck nothin is better than the 300ZX

While test numbers vary significantly for the same car models, for the record, Car & Driver clocked the 1991 and '92 Z's at 5.0 0-60 and Motor Trend clocked the 1993 (which I own) at 5.2 sec. The 1993 switched form aluminum to heavier steel brakes to combat durability problems.
The timed differences between the 350 and 300TT are small from 0 to 60 if you are drag racing from a complete stop. The twinturbo seems to out-accelerate the 350 while in motion, at just about any speed. The turbos require more time to spool up from a complete stop.

Yeah, I would agree with the numbers given for the 350Z's acceleration...more or less what my sources say. But I would have to disagree with the numbers given for the 300Z. These numbers are total different than the stats I have in front of me.
In the March 1990 issue of Motor Trend, it clocked the stock Turbo from 0-60 at 6.0 seconds. And in the June 1995 issue of Car and Driver, the STILLEN SMZ 300ZX is clocked from 0-60 at 5.3 seconds with 365 horses. The STOCK 300ZX with 300 horses can't possibly go faster than that! Hmmmmm...very interesting...hopefully it's not just wishful thinking!!

Copper727 and TT Enthusiasts,
I have the performance summary data from the May 1992 issue of C&D in my hand. Either I need bifocals or it says the tested 1992 300TT took 5.0 to reach 60 MPH.
Go to the site "Zhome.com" Click on Z History and then on Performance Data. There's all kinds of interesting info there, including a complete history car magazine test results.

On average from the data, it looks like the twin turbo probably reaches 60 around 5.59 seconds for a professional/semi-professional driver (which makes sense, because this correlates with the fact that its slightly SLOWER than the 5.3 & 5.5 seconds achieved by the 365HP Stillen Z). And I don't know how true this is, but I've heard that C&D generally publish much more flattering data than other mags. Finally, as a fairly proficient driver of cars with older manual transmissions, I probably won't have difficulties reaching 60 in around 6 seconds. For the not-so-proficient shifter, however, it may take much longer than that...

I've had a chance to get my '91 TT out on my local (home) track one day a while back with some other cars, including some 350Z's and one '90TT .....The only car that passed me that day was the other TT.....Drivers make a big difference too! ;-)

Well according to fast 4's the 350z has some pretty mean power up kits that will be available soon, they rekon NISMO's 350z power-up kit leaves the V6 N/A yet boosts its output from the factory 274hp to 394hp! They rekon that this is tame though cpompared to some of the turbo and supacharga kits they are testing atm.
so mabe soon the 350 will b able to kick some serious ***.

Hey, check this out! GReddy came out with a prototype twin turbocharged version of the 350Z!! With the turbos, the car now has 334.2 horses as compared to the 287 stock. Yeah, you're probably thinking that it's a negligible increase, but this is only a prototype and is only running at 5.6 psi! So with a boost controller and some other minor mods, the car could easily push well over 400 horsepower with minimal expense!
Here's what the engine looks like...

Hey Rizz,
Did you just purchase a Z33?!? And you just made moderator, too?? MAN, you are on one hot streak! What's next, your own private jet, a California dream girl, and maybe a million-dollar mansion?
Now that you have both a Z32 and a Z33, what's your opinion on the matter bro? Which one, in your experience, is the faster beast? (Hey, maybe even the Z31?!?....uhmmm, not likely )

LOL WHOA!!! Don't get ahead of yourself there!!
No, I didn't get a Z33. Nor do I plan to. If I'm gonna spend 30k or so on a car, I'm gonna do it on the one I own free and clear. Even though a private jet, a FEW California dream girls, and a Multi-million dollar mansion would be great, I don't see it happening in the forseeable future.
As far as faster goes, I think it's a matter of degree. I think the Z33 is faster off the line. Down the stretch though, I see the Z32 out gunning it, in stock trim of course. Until I see a Z33 making in excess of 700 hp then the top doggie here is definitely the Z32tt.

Hahahaa, sorry about that!
I guess I just assumed from your new icon and your recent involvement with the Z33 forum that you purchased a new Z! It sure would've been cool though...
I'm definitely still thinking about buying a new Z...just depends if I find a SMZ or a turbo-charged 350Z first!

The new avatar is a pic of me standing in a line of Z's. The stupid 350 just happens to be the first in line. This was at the last major Nissan meet that was in Schamburg, Il. Recent involvement? I post a couple of times and now I'm majorly involved? LOL Not that I would be opposed to buying a new car or having a 350 for that matter, but it's not in the finances right now.
Here, I'll include the original pic so that you'll have a better idea of what it is.

ya, but the z32TT COMES with those from the factory...plus theyre cheaper leaving u more $ to make it at least a stage X or so...but stock for stock...i'd say most reviews tend to agree that the 300 is the faster of the two as seen above.

I've been able to drive a couple of the 350Z's on track days at our local racetrack, and I'd have to say that my 300ZXTT is still the fastest of the two cars...the 350Z might beat the Z32TT off of the line, but when the turbos kick in in 2nd gear on the TT, I could reel in the 350 Z pretty quickly. In the corners, it boils down to who can drive the best, as the 2 are very equal there. The 165 MPH top speeds are nearly identical, and I think that the TT would still get there first. I was on the Portland International racetrack last week for a driving/racing school and I was completeley intoxicated with the power and acelleration of my TT down the straight-aways.....I love my Z32!
Finally ready to roll! My turn....

Hey marty4653,
Did you know that your '88 Z looks just like RedPrl Z's car? Great condition! He's also using the 350Z rims on his burgundy Z31, and they look pretty nice. From where and how much did you pay for your set?

I bought my wheels and tires from one of my fellow Z Car Club of Washington members who upgraded his 350Z with some really nice bigger wheels and tires....He sold the 17"ers to me for $400.00 as I recall. I do like the way they look on the car, they fill up the wheel wells pretty well, and make the car track/drive better. Thanks!

I think those look absolutely incredible on a Z31. I just wish they looked that great on a Z32.
Oh well. It's not like there aren't plenty of high strength, lite weight wheels to choose from out there.
