third gear grind

hey guys i am new to the site and looking for some direction. i have a 1990 twin turbo with some work done. i have a short throw currently install but it seems to grind in third gear at high speed/rpm. i have been reading that this is common. what could it be and can i fix it. Also i am looking into aftermarket intercoolers, are sidemounts the way to go or front mount. are the Z1 sidemounts better than the mainstream greddy and stillen front mounts. help please

I don't even own a z32 and I know that's a fact right there^^

For serious.

For the grinding issue, replace the tranny oil with pennzoil synchromesh. That helped with my grinding z31 t5. I will back up that gear oil.

Or rebuild it with new synchros.

Z32 owners recommend RedLine MTL or MT-90 transmission fluids to remedy grinding.

If that doesn't work, the syncros are probably bad... and rebuilding the trans usually ends up being only a temporary fix. If you replace it with a new JSpec trans though (I believe 97 or 98 was when the last revision to the trans was made), that'll absolutely remedy that problem though. Even a 93+ trans would help, but it's not as good as the newest, of course.

And there's a writeup (by me) on intercoolers...

... I recommend Stillen (the price has come down since I made that thread).

second ^^^^

synchro mesh is for a yellow metal type synchro that would usually use ATF (typically AWD and FWD trannies and GM trans's) but obviously ATF sucks for bearings and premature failure happens due to that, and thats why the synchromesh fluids were made. on by BG one by GM and one by penzoil. all of them are almost exactly the same. other than that though i think penzoil blows *****.

I will most likely be taking my Z in for a clutch change tomorrow. Spoke to the fellow regarding what work is performed and one of the items was a tranny flush.

My Z is a 91 2+2 and the shifting has never been a problem, always smooth and no grinding. What fluid should I request they use?

Thanks.

.....OK, just spoke with the shop again and they use a brand out of New Jersey called TranZilla.... anybody ever hear of that?

No, and with a name like that, I'd probably avoid the product. lol

As I said in my previous post, Redline MTL or MT-90.

and as i said i second that choice.

and a tranny "flush" is what you do in an auto trans since it has a vein system and other nooks and crannies. for a manual trans its just a fluid change, just like an oil change. not that that matters but it bothered me haha.
