Transmission: part2 filling problems
hey guys
Last night my trans started grinding in 1st 2nd and 3rd and i cant downshift without it grinding. Bad Synchro mesh? Is it cheaper to replace the trans then rebuilt it? Pearl City Trans over her quoted like 2k maybe more for a rebuild. Oh btw its a 1990 N/A. I know its common for the synchros to go bad in higher gears for 90-94's?
thanks

2k?!?!?! change teh fluid first, see if that helps you out, did for me. and im sure its cheaper to find a used tranny than get it rebuilt but then you dont know what your getting for sure or how long it will last.

also...
you would probably be better off getting a tranny used, or if you can spend the 2 grand get a brand new one here www.conceptzperformance.com, they sell them new for about 1800$ I wouldn't spend 2k on a rebuild.

Just a 2nd thought on this situation
When you are sitting still topped, with the clutch in and the car in 1st gear, does the car creep forward? Also, when trying to put it into gear from neutral at a stop, is it difficult or harder to get into gear or grind?
If the clutch disc comes apart, spring holders separate etc, when you push in the clutch, the disc will **** and still rub against the flywheel, thus acting if it is isnt fully disengaging. This will cause the car to creep while at a stop in gear, grind all gears during shifts etc.
Just making sure all bases are covered.

2nd BRAAP's comments, but I'd like to add another. I'm assuming this car is manual. How does the clutch feel? Is it feeling lighter than it should? I'm wondering if you've simply got a hydraulic leak in your clutch system... that would definately cause grinding due to the clutch not disengaging completely (and the grinding would go away in higher gears due to the closer gear ratios making gear changes more easy).

when the car is full stop its easy to engage any gear with no grinding. Also this morning it wasnt grinding untill the trans warmed up. as for the car creeping, just check and its not doing that

My tranny was doing somethin like that when i picked it up, then i changed the fluid to mt-90 and it went away. I bought at redline (KALIHI) on Waikamilo, for for 8 bucks a bottle.

Seriously
If you are going for a new one, get a New one from Nissan for the 2 grand they would charge you for a used rebuild...cheaper than Courtesy

I am just curious, how many miles are on your clutch & pressure plate? The difficulty you are having to me sounds very symptomatic of a failing pressure plate... For what it's worth, my approach to auto diagnostics is the philosophy of "think horses, not zebras". While you could certainly have an internal trans problem - I think it's fair to say that these MT's are not prone to failure. I'd put money on the pressure plate being your culprit though

Whoops, I was originally going to support your idea then switched to "wait, didnt i see this at courtesy parts"
