95 Twin Turbo water damage
Need help on info...I have an 83 280ZXT that was cashed. Looking to upgrade. Have opportunity to purchase 95 TT with 60k on it for an ubelievable price. Exterior of car looks perfect. Insurance totaled due to fresh water street flood. Not familiar with electronics on the newer Z's.
Car turns over but does not start. Any ideas on the potential problems encountered with a temporary converted Z U-Boat, getting the engine back to runability?
UCU issues. Injector computers?
Please help.
Thx
Steve

How far up did the water go? Does the dash and everything else light up and work? Headlights, interior lights, radio, winshield wipers, rear wiper, brakelights, back up lights, do any of these work? If it's just the ECU, I'd send it to JWT and let them upgrade/repair or replace if necessary. How good of a deal are you looking at? It would only be worth it if you can afford the repairs.

The only info I have is that the car was completely submerged (musta been some kind flood). No info on whether lights and other accessories work. Still waiting for feedback on some of my questions. (it is a long distance from me)
Car was totaled by ins co and they are trying to sell for $4,000. I could probably go another $3,000 in repairs after that.

4k on a 95TT? What the flying f@#k are you waiting for? That extra three grand will buy you another engine with some really good mods!
Ok, now that the impulsive side of me has spoken. The rational side can start.
Although it sounds great, I'd just be worried about the condition of the entire electrical system. Completely submerged doesn't sound good in the least. Corrosion would be my biggest worry. How long ago was this car totaled out? How long has it been sitting outside for that matter? Screw the motor at this point, how's the body and interior? There's alot of electrical stuff in a Z32. Besides the obvious creature comforts, there's also the HICAS system, ABS system, fuel pump, the alternator itself, and so on. If I was in your shoes, I'd really dig deep into what works and what doesn't. If its just a component or two that needs to be replaced, cool. If its the entire interior and/or wiring, that's entirely up to you. If you're really into restorations, this one hellauva opportunity to do that.

Yeah...when I saw the ad, I almost jumped at it immediately (impulsive as well). The car is in California; I'm near Boston so viewing it is not gonna happen.
They arn't giving me much info except that is was completey submerged. Yu are right, so many elec connections that could be corrupted with water...could be chasing the problems forever. If it was just the eng, it would be a no brainer. There is mildew and odor on the seats, carpet, etc. all the little circuit boards, etc. Ugh.Sounds like too much.

Yes, there are lots of things to worry about and consider. But still, like Rizz said... for $3k you can get yourself a new engine, and be able to tear everything else down for inspection at the least. Even if you replace some electrical components, you still will have a nice TT on your hands.. provided that you have the time to make sure EVERYTHING is up and running well.

Have you run a carfax report? Wouldn't that tell you more specifically what's wrong with the car? It's still sounding like a hell of a gamble. Without some more answers, I'd still very, very leary.

Calm down...LOL. Someone stick a boost gauge in your field of vision...LOL
I can't get any info from the site. I think it is a scam so that prospective buyers join the insurance claim/repo site for 15 bucks and then have **** cars avail. (not the ones you see in the pics).
I'll stick with rebuilding my crashed 280ZXT until someone out there has a 300ZXTT for sale at a reasonable price.

I was in a mood that day...don't ask! Anyway, I think you shouldn't give up on your search. I'd suggest some sites but I think I'd rather redirect you to another thread that I've already done that. The post is "selling my 300zx, oh yeah its a 94" or something along those lines. I provided links to buy/sell car sites, you could try there. Some online retailers as well I think. Keep looking I think you'll find the tt your looking for. The 280 is a nice car don't get me wrong. Classic car for a classic time. But not nearly the head turner or neckbreaker that a Z32 can be. Just my 2cents. Good luck

Thx for the info. I will check out the sites.
Yes...the 280ZXT is a classic and will not put you back in your seat as a Z32 will (although mine has over 275 RWHP with no internal eng mods). I do like the "modern" look of the Z32 plus in 1996, they only made 660 TT's.

Excluding the '90 model (1st year of production on the Z32) and the '96 model (variable timing deleted and tough to modify), what year in your opinion is the best Z32 TT ?
Thx

1995 would technically be the best because its newer, all the bugs are worked out from earlier years, and like you stated its the last year that retained the variable cam timing. Because of their scarcity and higher price tag though, 93's and 94's also lean toward the desireable side. The tt of those years also include the HICAS changing to electical instead of hydraulic. Although the 94 is when they changed the seatbelt to the B pillar instead of on the door. The leather package is more prevalent in the later years as well. Passenger side airbags in 94 as well.

This is a good FAQ page for the Z32.

Thanks for the link. It is an excellent resource.
I have located two 93TT's for sale. 1 has 90k; the other has 100k. Both are Red, stock set up and are 10 grand. The cars look great in the photos.
Problem is: 1 is in Florida, the other is in Colorado. Auto trader and Cars.com are good resources to locate cars but unless you fly to the locations, you can't drive the car. WTF...how do people do it !!!!!!!

buying a Z
Here's what I did. Get the money in the bank for the new car. Save for it or get a loan. Then watch the Auto Trader, etc. on the internet. Then plan your vacation around a car buying trip with your wife or girlfriend. You check the ads just before you go, drive to the area in question, and car shop. In my case, here in Southern Ontario, Canada, I drove to Toronto, where 12 Z's were advertised in the Autotrader. I checked out 3 of them, and got a 90 NA with 36 000 km (22 000 mi) that had never been in the rain or snow. Maybe a similar plan can work for you. Good Luck!
