alternator swap

n/a 90 300ZX

swapping my alternator once again, at least we think it's the alternator. I went flying through a puddle of water then my car freaked. The battery drains within 15 minutes and the alternator is not charging. Got 2 questions here:

1. Would water hitting the alternator cause it to fry?

2. What alternators besides the 90-96 300zx are compatible and are there any mods needed to be done?

Any help is appreciated guys....

I don't really think that water would cause the alternator to fry. I've driven my Z through puddles before, and I know the alternator has been wet and soaked, but it works just fine. You might want to check to make sure that your alternator is tight, as well as the alternator belt is tightened down.

done and done

I didn't think so either, but the car was fine till I went speeding thru a puddle. I have always done that in the past also. Alternator was replaced about 8 months ago with a used one.

I have 2 other Z's I can take parts off of and play trial and error but my main question is wether there are other alternators that will fit the 300Z besides the Z alternators. I read a mention or 2 about a Maxima or Infiniti alternator being compatible. I had not seen many write ups about it around so I figured I would ask. I know the 300 and Infiniti have the same engine, but since my main job is not a mechanic, I would have to assume the alternator would be the same.

Thanks

a chick with 3 300's....marry me now...

i was gonna offer to sell ya my alternator off of my NA engine, but apparently you already have one...
not flying through puddles might help ya a bit in solving these problems...

and check out twinturbo.net, i think i remember seeing an article on there about alternators on these cars when i was having starting issues with my NA before i swapped in the TT...

water and electricity is not a good pairing. Thats why these cars are equiped with the plastic/ fibre trays that cover your vital engine parts. A little puddle do much..but if its a considerably one with an already weakening alternator...it could kill it. Did u check all the cables before you replaced it, the force of thewater may have dislodged something?? Water is a bad thing for alternators...thats why people recomend that you cover it and other ignition parts whenever you wash your engine.

Compatible Alternators

90-96 na and tt alternators.
85-96 t alternators

I know this, becuase Ive changed mine twice before.

I dont think water would do that either. Could have knocked loose your connection, if you had the alternator replaced its possible that the positive cable terminal is just loose or becoming loose. Mine did.
