Coolant Temp gauge

Coolant Temp gauge
Hey everyone.
The question I have pertains to my coolant temperature gauge, as you might have guessed. About two weeks ago, my gauge stopped registering at all. Dead. All the other gauges in the cluster still work fine.
So I cleaned the connector to the temp sending unit, tried it, still no good. Then I tested the sending unit itself with a volt meter, seems to be performing fine. Lastly, I cut off the connector on the end of the wires (thinking a connection inside was bad or corroded), soldered on a new connector...still no go.
When I turn the car to "On" I can see the needle on gauge move up about an eight of an inch, but thats it. So I'm wondering what you guys might think the problem is. Could the gauge itself have failed? Maybe, the sending unit is still performing, but not within spec? Could this cause the gauge not to read at all? I'm at a bit of a loss. Maybe I should just replace the sending unit anyway, just for the hell of it. Let me know what you guys think! Thanks in advance!
