You know I had the same crap come up on my smog, I am going to review this thread and see if anything could apply to mine. The other thing they dinged me on is the service light did not come on when the key was turned on, so I have to track that down too... California, man, it is not like we have the cleanest air here anyway...just kidding, gotta do my part, I guess...

It's hard to tell what I'm looking at in those pictures. What do those wires go to? The connection tabs look awful, so replacing it is a good idea, but what is it? It runs across the firewall. Is that the brake booster under it? I can't think of what wires run up there?

E1 - Front wiper motor - looks like 3 wires
E2 - Brake fluid level switch - 2 wires
E3 - Starter relay - actually 2 - 2 wire connectors
E4 - Front wiper amplifier - looks like 6 wires, the biggest
E48 - Boost sensor turbo - 3 wires, not yours.
so how many wires are on the connector in question?

Yep, it the connector E-4 that CC mentioned. That doesn't have jack to do with passing smog. Did the shop you took it to say anything about low air pressure in the tires being a possible culprit as well? Purely coincidental. It probably wasn't hot enough on the 1st test and that's why it failed. I would track down a new 6-pin connector. Get the male and female sides to it. Splice it into each side. Make sure you connect the same colors together. $5.

It probably runs back to the wiper controls on the dash. You don't need to take it back that far. Just get rid of the bad connector. If it's the wiper amplifier, then I would think that it controls the speed of the wipers. When it amplifies the power, the speed of the wiper increase.
In case anyone can't tell,...I'm making this up as I go. Truth is,...I have no clue. It has to do with your wipers and nothing to do with smog, so stop hijacking my thread.

I haven't done much. The new EFI harness is in. I'll start again after the holidays. The next stepisreattaching the water tubes that run under the lower plenum and behind the motor. I remember how pissed off I got taking those apart. Putting 'em back together should be even more fun.
