Finding Gears
I just bought a 93 na 2+2 last month. It had 73,000 miles on it so I took it to a mechinc and had the timing belt and some other stuff replaced, basically 60K mile maintance stuff done. He mentioned that there was a plastic piece that wears down on the shifter and he could replace it and it would be eaiser to shift gears then. Right now I do have trouble finding gears when I shift, it feels very loose compared to my friends 2002 extera. I am always able to find the gears on her car. He wants to charge $200-300 for labor and around $30 for the part. My question is A) Does this sound right, is there such a part that is plastic and wears down like this B) Is this something simple enough to DIY and are there any walk thur instructions for doing this anywhere.
Thanks

Re: Finding Gears
Well, I wouldn't pay that much. On ebay I found bushings and a shifter boot for $35. The bushings are the #1 cause of shifter play and yes you can do it yourself.

Re: Finding Gears
I also just recently bought a '91 na coupe and my shifter is very loose. I can find the gears fine, but for example, if i'm in fifth gear the shifter can wiggle as if its in neutral. It doesnt come out of gear but has A LOT of play in each gear. Is this the bushings? Is it hard to change them or is it like changing the shift boot or something.

Re: Finding Gears
this is a common problem with older Zs, and it's the shifter bushings. parts are around $30 like you said, but 200 for labor is outrageous. i payed $20 for labor for my guy to do it for me. www.ttzd.com and then click on tech. it's got all kinds of DIY things there. don't go to a mechanic for this one, it's an easy job and takes 30 minutes.
