gas smell

well I got the Z running pretty solid now but the other day i noticed the smell of gas coming from the exhaust. Im guessin it's more than like a leaky injector but im not to sure. I checked the plugs to see if I could find which injector was faulty, but they all seemed well. It has the smell all the time hot or cold. The oil kind of smells like gas also which could be a blown piston I would imagine, but im not sure what to think. So if anyone has any suggestions please let me know.

A leaky injector would force a fault code. Is your check engine light on? Check for fault codes.

You would know if you had a blown piston.

There's abig possibilty that it's not coming from your exhaust, but from your engine bay and being wafted (sp?) back. During the cold season, it's a good idea to tighten all your fuel hose clamps since the cold makes them shrink a little and the clamps become loose. Also, there might be some brittle hoses if they're old. I had to replace my fuel system on my old Z b/c of this. (dampener, regulator, filter, and all hoses) I would recommend doing this ASAP as it can cause an engine fire.

I don't remember. You'll need two hoses that are actual nissan hoses that go to the fuel filter. Here's a write up on how to locate fuel leaks.

I made sure all of the hoses were tight and in good condition. The z idles better now, but still runs rich. The dampener, regulator are only about a year old so im not sure if they could be a problem and the filter was replaced less than a month ago. I really need to get this fixed, because im getting about 100 miles out of a full tank of gas. luckily I have a 98 yukon thats getting much better gas mileage than the z so ive been driving it. LOL. How difficult are the O2 sensors to get to? Im also changing the timing belt next weekend (gonna be hell) so hopefully it's a timing problem.

If it's running rich, it's probably the O2 sensors. I would change them. They can be a sucky job ,sorry, but not hard once you get to them.

Yeah they are supposed to run rich when warming up, but this is all the time and it's a lot worse than just a slight smell. I forgot to give you guys some other possible related information. It takes the Z a really long time to warm up. moisture and some smoke out of driver side exhaust

i have had a problem with the smell of gas, but mine does not come from the exaust-or at least i dont think it does. i smell it when i am in the drivers seat. it seams like im leaking gas but i cant see any stains in the driveway. when i am at the pumps i take the gas cap off and there is alot of pressure on the cap. i don't know if it is meant to be pressurized, or i have a bad vent. i think this might be the problem but i just bought my z a month ago so im not sure about it. if u could help me that would be great. sorry about posting on your thread but it seemed like the right place for it.

The system should be pressurized, but you need to get those fuel leaks taken care of ASAP. You won't see it dripping unless there's a bunch of gas coming out. Gas evaporates quickly. Tighten all your fuel clamps via the write up I posted earlier and if needed replace some fuel lines, filter, etc.
