Gas smell in car and loss of power

I have a 1990 300zx NA and after I start and drive it for a few minutes a strong gas smell comes into the car. What could be causing this? I've also noticed that the acceleration has bogged down a lot.

If you are smelling gas and it feels like the car is losing power and you are getting crappy gas mileage, chances are you have a fuel leak.

Yeah... and it doesn't take a mensa member (much less a regular human being) to figure out that gas smell + loss of power = fuel leak.

Ok... Is there an easy way to find out where the leak is? I haven't seen any gas that leaked underneath the car.

It wont usually be that easy. You probably have a fuel line or maybe an injector o-ring leaking, or bad. etc...You just have to pinpoint, where the smell is coming from. Then look around that general area. Good luck.

You haven't seen any gas under the car because it's evaporating before it gets there.

Tighten all the fuel hose clamps - loosening over time is the #1 cause of fuel leaks. If that doesn't remedy the issue... http://twinturbo.net/ttnettech/fuelleaks/fuelleaks.html

Stick with OEM. Go used if you need to save money, but just know that you're going to continue having injector failure until you retrofit to the newer style injectors. Thank our government for the ethanol fuel blend that's causing your injectors to die. (And please don't ask about the details - there are posts on here and twinturbo.net detailing everything you would ever need to know about the retrofit.)

But I also don't think bad injectors are the cause of your fuel smell.

For what its worth, i've found cold starts are the best time to locate leaks. I'm guessing the pressure is higher while the car is cold and also the engine isn't hot yet so the fuel won't evaporate so quickly.

I agree, but if your going to go through the trouble to replace one injector, check your budget and change or upgrade them all.

Actually, it's because the rubber hoses expand when they're warm, thus sealing the leaks. As per my earlier link: "Fuel smells will usually start during colder weather, since the parts contract even more in the cold air during a thermal cycle."
