to gut the cats or not to gut the cats that is the question.
it may sound like a REALLY dumb thing to do, but i hear that you can get resonable H.P. gains by doing so (apprx. 40-50) now i know if you get cought there are huge fines to pay and the car will never pass emissions again( i got a friend who can get me a sticker ) so im not too worryed about that. basiclly im wondering if this is worth doing and if anyone has done this to thire z, i already have the exhaust off the car, its a 91' tt so i dont really need the back pressure because the turbos create enough to make the difference. any answers would be appreciated!!
thanks!

I own a '92 NA and the cats are removed on it, you are allowed to do it in NZ, and they have been replaced with small mufflers. The car runs sweet without any trouble, and sounds better. I think it also get better fuel economy (is 700km+ on a tank good on the highway?)
So I say do it!

It's nice to be legal, especially because cops love to hassle Zdrivers, so if you dont get smogged, and dont have a tag, then expect to get drilled when you get pulled over for carving apexes in a 25mph zone. Do it if you honestly think that you won't get busted. But then again, what the point in adding horsepower if you dont plan on using it.
oh well... thats my thinking.

YES GUT THEM! You will see an increase in spool up time and H.P. Cats are a major restriction in the exhaust stream. I wouldn't look for 40hp, but you will see a difference.
However, I would reccomend replacing them with some split down pipes from Greg Dupree, by far the best design DP's for the Z. You can find those at StricktlyZ.com

Well, seeming as my buddy works at an Emission shop down here, and in 2006 every car( I repeat)EVERY car is being checked, if you dont show up at the shop, guess who shows up at your door step, none less than the EPA and DOT bastards themselves (making us spend 10 g to legalize a Skyline, they suck). And if you get caught with Gutted cats, guess who gets a whopping fee of 550 bucks????? you guessed it, YOUR ***. actually the fee is all depending on how much "deadly" (or so they say) gasses you are putting out. so NO do not screw yourself, stay legal, if you want a huge horsepower increase, go buy a Modena, haha.

An alternative to gutting, I think, would be to get the Random Technology cats. They're supposed to be freer flowing and add hp by lowering your backpressure similiar to a gutted cat. You should still be able to pass emissions as well. I haven't heard anything bad about them. If you can afford them give'em a try and tell us what you think. For more info go here
