Hicas

ok this thread isn't to ask what HICAS is i already know..but my HICAS light on my cluster came on about a month ago and has been on ever since. so my question is..could this mean i need to add power steering fluid in? Or what do you think it might be?

When my HICAS light came on it meant I was low on PS fluid. If you add more fluid it will probably go off. Check your PS hose as it might have a leak like mine did. It's important that you get it changed if it is leaking because it will get fluid on the alternator and ruin it over time.

Also our cars take Dexron III Auto Transmission fluid instead of PS fluid.

Yes. It says that in the repair manual.

Besides, it's basically the same thing with a different label.

The ATF has a higher boiling point than the PS fluid.

As some of you know, I have recently bought a '92 TT w HICAS. Right now the system isnt workin at all. The light just stays on, and I have added fluid to it. I have tried to do the self diagnosis test on the electronics, but i never could get the sequence to work. i guess i wasnt fast enough for the car. What I am wondering is if u guys think it would be worth keepin it, or to just pull the system off and delete it. Either way, the cost will be about the same, repairing it and searching for the problem will probably take longer though. Do u guys feel that big of a difference drivin the Z32 w HICAS?

I still have the HICAS on our Z32TT. If you are a drifter, like to do donuts, and just like to drive it really hard then you might want to consider taking it off and putting on the elimination kit perferrably the stillen kit. I like the HICAS is makes a difference in handling around the turns and sometimes keeps me from spinning out when turns are taken too hard.

I'd get rid of it. I'd like to remove the whole damn thing from the actuator in the engine compartment all the way back. That's about 75 lbs. The HICAS is nice on the cars because they tend to suffer from understeer. HICAS helps to counter that. Without it, it would be worse, unless you corrected it with the suspension, i.e. sway bars. I'm planning on removing it down the road.

And as far as HICAS eliminator kits go, the Stillen bar is a bit over rated. It's a very basic piece of equipment. There are some places that sell something similar for significantly less. I believe maybe SPL and AMZ.

SPL may be the better kit because they replace the tie rods also. My Stillen kit came with the car so that's what I used.
