high mileage
hey, not really my forum seeing that the z I own is an '84 but I really wanna switch up to an early 90's 300zx. so anyways, on to the question... I found this really nice 300zx, perfect replacement for mine, red, 5 speed, t tops, great paint job, good interior, but, the odometer cluster an stuff had to be replaced because the spedometer stopped working at some point. what I want to know is how strong is the vg30de?, right after I get it, if i do end up buying it, I would replace the timing belt and all the fluids and stuff. my current 300zx is at about 191,348 miles, so i know the old 300s can last quite a while if taken care of, is there anything i should be worrying about, engine-wise, if this z has around the same mileage as my z?

well it depends
is it a twin turbo or an N/A? What year is it? All these are vital questions that need to be answered in order to answer your question. All VG30DE engines are "Strong like Bull!" Turbo engines beyond 100k you should be wary of, but N/A engines are like most other Nissan engines. They'll just run and run and run and run. Early years tend to have more bugs than later years. I suggest you do a little more research on our beloved Z. As long as you don't get someones left over problems, whatever Z you get should serve you well.

The transmission seems to be a very weak point
and parts aren't cheap.
Just bought my 93' NA about a month ago with 103k miles for $5,500.00.
I replaced the clutch ($120 Ebay) and changed all the fluids.
Runs very smooth except my my tranny gear bearings are
shot.
You should definitely set aside some $$ for whatever repairs.
I've already spent $750.00 for miscellaneous parts
(O2 sensor, clutch kit, premium fluids...).
And I'm looking at around $1,200 to have my tranny rebuilt.
I'm hoping to find a good write-up and maybe do it myself.
How hard can it be? Hmm...
If you're a Do-it-yourself kinda guy who takes the time
to do research (on forums such as this one) then you'll
save lots and learn much! I certainly have.
One important advice:
Have the car thoroughly inspected by a trusted mechanic.
It should cost around $50 bucks. And run a Carfax report ($20).
If the car is clean and the price is right, you'll love it!
(I had 83' 280z once and it was one tail happy ride).
Hmm... it's 8:13 pm, the sun is going down, weather is cooler,
and the traffic is minimal; I'm goin' for a quick cruise
