newb with a speedometer question

Hey everyone... I am pretty new here. I own a 90 300zx TT and recently, my speedometer has been acting up. Sometimes it would work and other times, it would not move from 0. I also noticed that when the speedometer is not working, the odometer is not moving either.
My car is a Manual tranny. If anyone has any input, I would really appreciate it.
Thanks

I'm not 100% sure but I do believe there is a speedo cable that hooks to your tranny if I remember right, I could be way off but I'm sure someone will come with the correct answer if that is not it.

i agree wtih the speedo cable...but what about his tach, isnt that electronicly functioned? no cables. by any chance do you have aftermarket gauge faces? by buddy did and his tach worked i think but his speedo didnt, i think it was getting caught up on the new back faces. the reverse glow ones.

It's a sensor...... You can first check and make sure the connections are good, and the wires are undamaged. Then you can remove the sensor and check it with a multimeter. With the mm set to ohms and the leads touching the sensor wires, the mm should go from showing an open circuit to showing continuity as you rotate the sensor. If the sensor stays open as you rotate it, it's bad. If it shows continuity as you rotate it, your problem is most likely elsewhere.

On the tranny on the passenger side I do believe it is, right about middle of the tranny.
