rough idle, smooth drive
hi all. i went and test drove the second z32 in my search for a car. it was a 91 TT with a jdm in it. im aware of the hit or miss affect of jdm's, but when i went to look at it. there seemed to be something wrong. it had a rough idle(it shook the whole car), but when i drove it, it was another story. as sooon as i started going it drove as smooth as silk. the idle was quiet, just rough. also, my friend who went along said it smelt "funny"...she, of course, couldnt explain the smell. the car did have hks exhaust and possibly gutted cats. what could be the problems with this car? any help would be much appreciated. its either a z32TT or a mr2 turbo. thanx!

Bad ignition coil? Injector? Idle itself? What did the owner say about it? Maybe its running too lean? Do you really want to diagnose and possibly fix a car that isn't even yours? Keep looking there's always more out there.

thats what i was thinkin. he' s selling it for cheap(6500) which is well w/in my budget. i'd really like a z32, but i can settle for a mr2...performance wise theyre somewhat similar. if its something cheap, i could buy it and fix it. he didnt say anything about it. he just kept saying it was fast. he was also on a team so i guess it was raced. im weary.

MR2 on par with a tt? I don't know what you're smokin, but you need to share!
I'd be wary as well of the condition, especially if you think it was raced. TT don't hold up well to torture with out regular maintenance. Besides, you're in California. You mean to tell me you can't find a good used tt in Cali? Come on! You need to search a little harder.

i found plenty bu tnot too many for under 8G's. the mr2 turbo does 0-60 in 5.3 sec compared to the z32's 5.0 and the 1/4 in 13.9 compared to the 13.7. i said somewhat. it's kinda close and upgrading is cheaper. however, a z32TT is pretty much my practical dream car if you know what i mean. 2 sec on both of those stats is a lot, but SOMEWHAT close. by the way, ive read a lot of your replies on this forum and im quite impressed with your knowledge!
