Rough idle and suspension help for rookie
Hi, I have a 91 300ZX 2+2, auto. The guy I bought it from put new exhaust and a Injen intake on it. Has about 115,000 miles, not sure because odometer shorts on and off and only works half the time.
My question, my car rides incredibly rough over DC streets. I know a low sports car will do this but how often am I supposed to replace the shocks/struts. How much will this cost for basic replacement. Not looking for performance parts.
My car is also idling rough at times. Most of the time its fine, but sometimes sputters and vibrates hard. Will a tune-up solve this?
Thanks for all the help, I need. Going to drive across country from DC to LA in a month and want this thing to be reliable.

If the shocks are original, then after 115k + miles, they're most likely shot. The springs are probably worn also, which could cause sagging. You could go with the factory set up; i.e. new OEM shocks and springs. This is generally more expensive than if you went with an aftermarket setup. I had 150k on mine before I changed out the shocks and springs. Eventhough I switched to Tokico Illumina shocks and Eibach pro springs, the ride was much smoother than the previous setup. If you want to keep everything stock, then I would recommend you replace at least the shocks. You could possibly get away with not replacing the springs.
A tune up could fix your problem. It will at least reduce the rough idle problem. Change the plugs and the fuel filter, then clean the air filter also. since there's no cap, rotor or plug wires, a tune up is pretty simple.

Some people say that the OEM suspension components begin to wear out after as early as 30k.
The Z32 is not known for having a harsh ride feel to it. You'll really notice an improvement in the ride quality by installing new shocks; whether they're factory or aftermarket.
