Royal Purple 75w140

Aight I asked this question on another forum and didnt get a difinitive answer. The thing is my synchros arent all that happy with me at the moment and I need to change my fluid out in hopes it will help me some (the dreaded 2 and 4 grind). Now I know the manual states 75w90 for the tranny. But my question is this. I do alot of Autobahn driving (100+ for 1-2 hours normally) Will the thicker fluid be more beneficial to me while traveling at those speeds?? I know a tranny oil cooler will be the way to go, but I am going to Iraq in less than 8 months (6 of which will be winter and she gets stored) and then I go home after that.

Recommendations/Comments/Bitches/Gripes/Complaints/Comments welcome!

I would not use a 75w140 weight oil. If your Z was in Iraq with you.... maybe, but not in Germany or on the north american continent. The w140 will not help your syncros. A trans cooler will help with the autobahn temps.

Just my 2¢.

LOL..... I didn't know that was yours. I've seen so many gear grinding posts that I just quit opening them. Fresh oil is a good first step. Next would be properly bled and adjusted clutch. After that I'd just live with it like I do.

If you have a short-shifter, I won't go into my spiel about them and syncros, but you might find something in a search here.

No shorty for me. Had em in my RX-7's (FC, 2 FA's) and didnt really care for em. I can shift just fine without it. I am going to do all my fluids this weekened. Flush the brakes out with some new DOT 3, and Royal Purple the rest of the car. Hopefully alot better afterwards, German Race Wars on the 1st. Gotta lay the smack down on some Bimmers and Mercs.

Ok, update. I ended up using the 75w90 Royal Purple in the tranny and it made a huge difference. Still have a high RPM 2nd gear grind (I know, new tranny time) but every other gear is like butter now. And i used RP in the engine as well. No more lifter tick at all. Recommended by me, SGT Jason Shevlin, US Army!

Hey, I was on my way home from work the other day and started laughing..... I was wondering if that was a trick question about the oil cooler. Unless you were thinking about some kind of heat sink setup on the oil pan, an oil cooler wouldn't do anything unless you added some kind of pump to move the oil thru the cooler.

That's cool that the oil change helped. When I'm driving hard, I can pretty much grind every gear, both up and down. You can mostly eliminate the grind when shifting by waiting a fraction of a second before shifting into the next gear from the neutral position. Doing that allows the input and output shafts to come closer to the same speed with each other. (basically rev matching).

or double clutch it. for normal driving. you know. clutch down remvoe from gear clutch up clutch down put into new gear. probably dont need a new tranny though. just synchros put in or rebuilt.

Thank you Eric for that wonderful insight into double-clutching, lol. I do double clutch, but even at high RPMs from 1st to 2nd a DC still allows it to grind. No good for racing. Now I have an excuse to buy more car parts. You know single piece drive shaft. maybe a new clutch while I am in there. who knows. Leader gears maybe. I dont know, I dont know if we'll have time.

Eric, it costs more to have the tranny rebuilt than it does to just get a "new" one. And I might as well get a 97+ with strengthened synchros.

fine forget i said anything i never had to price out a ZX tranny from rebuild to replace. so that was just a stab. and i didnt know you already double clutch. thats the best you can do so yeah your tranny es goin bye bye. you can try to rev match while your at it. i taught myself to rev match, i was able to shift with out a clutch. its tuff though. im sure yah can do it if i can. haha and sorry some people. most people dont know what double clutching really is. dont look at it as an insult to your intelligence.

As an old soldier I think this is the first time I've heard things like "Im going to Iraq" and "Things are changing for the better" used in the same sentance.
