stock turbo question
Hey guys,
Im wantin to keep usin stock tubros and make my z faster, also im just broke and dont have the money for big turbos. Anyway, some guy on another forum is sellin a pair a 90 stock turbos with 85K on them, he is sellin them for 200 and he said they are in workin condition, hes upgrading. I have 120K on mine(and eninge). Im lookin around to get a boost controller and dont know how much longer mine will last after messing with the boost on them. whould this be good to do? I know that the stockers can get me to the mid to low 13's, which is what im lookin to do with my car.

turbonetics and turbo city, in socal, are a couple of bigger places that sell new and rebuilt turbos. They will also rebuild yours. I talked to both places about rebuilding turbos. I have a IHI turbo that I bought. It came with a rebuild kit. They said that I can do the rebuild myself, and then I send them the center section of the turbo, which is the housing, shaft, the two impellers, bearings and seals, and they can re-balance the assembly for me for like $75.

Your looking at anywhere between 150-500 per turbo for a rebuild. You can buy the parts and do it yourself for the low end cost but if you've never opened up a turbo and don't know what to look for as far as wear and/or damage you may end up double spending if the shop that balances the assembly finds something else wrong. Turbos don't go bad without a reason so if you think yours are close to giving up the ghost pay close attention to how they sound when under load.

correction...stock turbos can take you to the mid 12's with the proper work and other bolt on's...85k is a lot for stockers, 120k is a real lot...but 200 is a damn damn good price, why the hell not, if you get even a few months out of 'em it's money well spent

not really that expensive to get into the 12's with stockers...intake/exhaust, ECU and boost controller should do it...but it's probably not the best for the car (not bad for it, but not good for the turbos...)

John Force may be able to get that car into the mid 12's, but not you're average everyday Joe. The mod's that you're talking about are very basic. You'll need more than that under the hood to get into the 12's.
Don't waste your $ on those used turbos. If you're going to go through the time and effort of changing the turbos, then do it right. This isn't a job you should be looking for shortcuts on.
