synth oil

UIhm. from what I know. Syntehtic oil provides more protection to your engine so I'd go with that. that's what I use to use on my Old motor. (Mobil 1 - Synthetic 10W40) once i get my TT motor in I'll be using Lucas FUll SYnthetic oil. with OEM nissan Filter.

Depends, if it has used Sythetic all its life then ok, but if not, the synthetic oil may spring a leak because its a tad thinner than regular oils. My car had 111,000 when I bought her, and I have always used syntec in all my cars, but when I did it started leaking oil and it didn't when I first got'er. But I still use syntec just slowly replacing all the seals =0)

plus plenty of other discussions about oil if you search.

I woudln't use synth. I used it when I first got my Z, and I sprung a leak. If synth. has been used in the Z the whole time, then sure, but how u gonna know unless it's a one owner. Or, use synth to help find leaky seals =)... lol

...or if you find yourself scraping bottom trying to pay off loans and debts ...you feel my pain because you too have invested big $$ into your car to rebuild the engine and can use synthetic oils with peace of mind knowing you dont have to fight oil leaks because the engine is in essence brand new

Here are the facts.
The real advantage of Synthetic Oil over Conventional Oil is that it takes longer to break down... So while it might take 4 months for Conventional Oil to break down and become non-functional under normal driving conditions, it might take Synthetic Oil 6 or 7 months to break down to a point where it's non-functional under the same driving conditions... (those numbers are guesses, but either way, both oils will last 3 months or longer, and the Synthetic Oil will last a little longer than Conventional.)
...but guess what? You're supposed to change your oil every 3 months or 3000 miles anyway, so the real advantage of synthetic is lost as long as you change your oil as frequently as you should. If you don't change it every 3 months or 3000 miles, then I'd go Synthetic as it'll protect your engine longer than Conventional. But I'd really suggest changing your oil as often as suggested.
In terms of viscosity, 10W30 (or any other weight) Conventional Oil is the exact same as 10W30 (or other same weight) Synthetic Oil, so they'll both protect equally well over the 3 months/3000 miles that you drive with it.
Someone brought up developing leaks with synthetic oil; this is a real concern. There are detergents in Synthetic Oil that Conventional Oil doesn't have. These detergents are what "cause" the leaks. I say "cause" with quotation marks because it doesn't actually cause the leaks, but it cleans their openings. The leak was always there if Synthetic shows it, but there was crud blocking it and the detergents just removed the crud and allowed the leak.
So here are my conclusions:
If you recently replaced all your gaskets and/or are sure the engine won't leak, go Synthetic, it can never hurt your engine if it doesn't leak.
If you beat on your car a LOT and you are concerned that a Conventional Oil might break down before your next periodic oil change, go Synthetic.
If you currently use Conventional Oil and don't meet either of those parameters, there's no real reason to switch to Synthetic.
And finally, if you, for whatever reason, don't change your oil as frequently as recommended, go Synthetic as it'll provide the longest-lasting protection for your engine. But really, do yourself a favor and change it ever 3 months or 3000 miles.

I'm loyal to Mobil1 (oil and filters if I can't get a Nissan 55Y or the elusive 60U filter), I've never used anything else and I've never been disappointed.
and thank you emo236, it's nice to be appreciated.

I heart Mobil...anywho...if you go fully synthetic you cant go back....my one friend has a brother who told him about this he knows alot about motors and stuff he's a DSMer though had a 12 second talon he parted it cuase he wants faster....hes insane any ways he's taking classes adn stuf but something about when you go fully synthetic you can go back i cant remmember why ill ask him tommorow and post it.

Actualy thats all true. Except for when you already have alot of miles on your engine. I ran mobile 1 fully syn. Every seal started to leak. Drained the full syn. and filled up the previous oil and the leaks stoped. So be prepared for it IF it happens

I'll just add a little to what ZLover4Life stated. The lubricating properties dino oils are generally broken down at 2k - 3k miles. On synthetics, they break down during the first 2k - 3k miles and then they don't break down anymore. The broken down lubricating properties in synthetics is better than new dino oils.
The main reason that you have to change synthetic oils is not because of it loosing its lubricity. It is because of contaminants like carbon, moisture and dirt.
Myself, I haven't experienced the leaks. I have experienced a little smoke a start-up on other cars. I think the benefits of synthetics outweigh the costs.
