Tranny Question

Well my clutch is on the frits and my tranny front main seal is bad for shure. (drenched in gear oil, could be reason clutch is slipping) I started to do some research and looked into replaceing the whole tranny with the clutch and all I could find is a TT tranny on the web. I was wondering if a TT tranny could bolt on to the N/A or would I be better off finding someone who could rebuild my N/A tranny. In the research I did I found that the gear ratios are a little different in the N/A Tranny v.s. the TT tranny and I would lose torque with a TT transmission, is this true?

Thanks for all your input,
N8

The tt and N/a tranny's are not directly swappable, you have to do some slight mods to it

wait, does your tranny need to be rebuilt? Why not just replace the seal and clutch and be done with it?

My car has almost 150,000 miles on it and I plan on keeping the car for a long time. I would hate to pay all that money to replace the clutch and seal then a sincro go out and have to pay the labor to have them pull everything again. The only way I would do it my self is if I had access to a lift and I don't so I might as well just get the tranny rebuilt or replaced while its out of the car. I really wish someone made a 6 speed for these things.

nope....i don't think a 6 speed would be enough of a benefit to pay 6 grand for. I could get a TT front clip and do a TT swap for that much.

a conclusion that's often come to. Do you have synchro problems right now?

Just to clarify on this...

The N/A and the TT have the same 5 speed transmission. the only difference is where the starter mounts to the bellhousing on the TT is machined differently due to the larger diameter flywheel used on the TT, to use a TT Tranny in an N/A you have to either grind down where the starter mounts so it could engage the smaller flywheel or use the tt flywheel which can only be used with a tt clutch. The internals are all the same the different ratios are in the rear diff where the one is 4.08 and the other 3.67. Unless you are talking about auto tranny's then you have to take into account the different lengths and corresponding driveshaft lengths.

This is what ive read anyways... if im wrong on something plz let me know

Thanks Aphrodite, I think I might just look into getting my N/A tranny rebuilt only thing is I donno where to take it. My usual tranny place ripped me off installing my 1 piece ds (couldn't get the rusted bolts off or I would have done it my self). and the Nissan dealer charges something like 74 bux an hour.

yeah... My auto tranny crapped out on me (turns out the last owner didnt change tranny fluid !!! )... and it ended up costing me damn near $3500 for a complete rebuild, although its now a better tranny then it was off the factory with a 3 year warranty... but still that was a huge expense that was not factored into my purchase 7 months ago...

Are you sure its the front transmission seal? more than likely its the rear main seal on your engine. Syncros go bad over time...you have to remember they are only made of brass . If the car is a true investment to you and you plan on keeping it for a while, i sugest to get a rebuilt or new tranny just for ease of mind and the warranty.

yeah its gear oil that leaking....you can see it on the bottom of the tranny and it smells like burning gear oil. I have also read somewhere that the front main seal on the trasmission was a problem on the Z32.

Hey while we're on the subject of synchros and trannys my 91 n/a will not go in reverse at all. There is no grinding at all it just feels like something is blocking it from slipping into gear. Ive never had a sync go out so i dont really know what to look for
