Took a leap... sold my XL1 and bought...
I've filmed some events w/ my Canon XL1, but it requires so much time to put together a worth while product (and I wasn't getting paid) that I've decided to focus just on photography. So I bought me a Canon 50D which will be arriving in the mail on Tuesday. I mentioned that to my co-worker and he asked me to do his wedding pictures & he will pay me... not bad for not even owning the camera yet.

And it has arrived. I got 2 lenses (18-55mm and 55-250mm), both are IS. Also got .45x and 2.0x attachment lenses, a USB card reader, extra battery, aluminum hard case, backpack, and some other goodies. Me gusta.
Pics taken with my old school Sony 5MP... just doesn't cut it anymore.

I bought it from an ebay company "GETITDIGITAL" which I suggest NOT buying it from them. I bought a complete kit from them for ~$1600. Came with two lenses (18-55mm IS & 55-250mm IS), two lens adapters (0.45x & 2x), hot shoe flash, an awesome hard case, a REALLY crappy tripod, and an even more crappy sling bag. Plus some extra odd & end things. It was an okay deal, but they overcharge for all that crap. I could have bought everything I needed for $1300.
EDIT... the reason I bought online was because all the local camera shops (Inkleys & Pictureline) were back ordered 3-4 weeks on the 50D.
I have already done several pro shoots & will be getting more equipment soon (like speedlites & triggers)... but to get into photog for some great shots just for youself, I would suggest the Canon Rebel XSi or T1i, or Nikon D40 ($600-$1000).
Some people say that anything above 10-12MP is a waste... I completely disagree. I absolutely love my 15.1MP, and actually wish it was higher. I also LOVE how the 50D uses the ISO. I shot a club party on Saturday night & had to use really high ISO sometimes to get the picture light enough. Even at 1600 & 2000 ISO, there was virtually no noise.
Some examples of high ISO:

I kinda want to take some photography classes which I see require you to buy an SLR camera so when I actually get to the class I'll figure out what to buy. It'll probably be a few months before it starts up. I'm waiting for registration to open, by then i bet the prices will be slightly cheaper.
Those are some nice pictures.

Rockin! Make sure to take "Digital Photography" unless you want to deal with film.
If you haven't already, check out my Basics sticky (https://www.zdriver.com/forums/dark-room-photo-video-music-270/digital-photography-basics-tips-27289/) as it's pretty much a summary of all the stuff you will talk about in class.
Know the basics: Shutter speeds, apertures, ISO, exposures, white balance, & composing pictures.
Enjoy! It's addicting! SpeciallySpiked has some rockin rally pics w/ his Rebel... he should post them. < wink >

Well, I've got a pro wedding shoot scheduled for Dec 28th.
I'm going to buy some accessories this weekend.
Battery grip...
50mm f1.8 prime lens (perfect for portraits)...
and I'm still doing research on some speedlites & triggers.
