Thumbs up 2001 Ford Explorer Sport

My mom got another truck today, the '01 Explorer Sprort with a 4.0 V6 Auto. She tossed me the keys and told me to take it around the block. I must say it was a treat to drive, good pedal responce, pulled good with and without A/C, great brakes, good steering...felt just a bit squishy what with the 275/70/15's on it and rocked a little when I stopped, was a little top heavy but I never felt unsafe in it. I took it off road to test the suspension, minor off road stuff, grass, dirt, and mediam bumps. It handled it very well for a 2 wheel drive Sport Utility. I would own one.

yeah there pretty bad but the 4.0 kinda sucks, my explorer has the 4.0 and it seems way slow. But gets pretty good gas milage, around 20-25. Its ok, but outdated. She only got the 2x4 that sucks, i'd rather the 4x4 but she probably knew that you'd be out in the swamps and muddin. But other then that its a great truck, my 4.0 went 115+ so it was ok for smashing.

Yeah, she won't be doin any off roading, thats for sure. But it was well taken care of and the 4.0 is full of life. I think she will be happy with it for a while.

Yeah there good little engines, make sure the front main(crank) seal doesn't leak, mine did, i had to replace it cause the oil pressure was running way high. It kind of scared me...

Just be glad it does not have the 3.0. My 2.3L makes the same amount of HP as the 3.0, and get's way better gas milage

they updated the 3.0 to the 4.0 i believe. Cause the last 3.0 was in 86' or something. My explorer is a 93' and its the same design as the new one's. Maybe you ment the 3.8l.

those 4.0's were only in the explorer for a short while, the explorer was the test bed for the mustangs v6 engine. ford figured if it could powered the explorer, the mustang would be great. my g/f's bro has one and loves it.

My mom's 1998 Ranger has a 3.0L V6, her 2001 F150 has a 4.6L V8 and her 2001 Explorer Sport has the 4.0L V6...I read the catalyst on all of them.

they still use the 3.0's in Ranger's. Ranger has three american option's. 2.3L 16 Valve, Mazda. 3.0V6, and 4.0V6, For Newer modles. They also have Desiel models, but you won't find then in USA.

really diesel would be bad ***, yeah i didn't know they were still using the 3.0. I figured the would have the 3.8(v6) the mustangs and some tbirds had. But w/e. The 4.6 is a good motor, but not a torquey as the old 5.0.
