When does Mike get back to town?

 

Looks like the weather may cooperate too. High of 93 and sunny scheduled.

 

I'll have to see how my weekend goes, but I'll probably be there. Probably the last chance to rip it up before it gets TOO damn hot.

 

I'll roll by on my way to work to see what you all are up to.

 

I dont think Ill run, but may show just to see how it looks and how everyone is running..

 

Anyone think that they are going? I had a long shitty day and I'm thinking about skipping it.

Well it looked like a fun day, but I couldn't sit out in the heat any longer. Showed up at 8:30 to the track and saw Ty's car but no Ty. Ended up that they didn't start till around 10:00 (instead of 9:00) due to some forgetful event personnel. Finally met Chris and watched Ty do his first run (I'll let him post his times). There was a Silver STI out there with the fastest time in the beginning (I think he ran a 75 or 78, most were running 85s to 95s). It was cool while I was out there. Sorry that I didn't really get to meet you Ty (I waved but he didn't see me). Good driving by the way.

 

Talked with Ty (nice wheels, btw) for a few minutes before he had to go. Soon after, Mike (Zrolimit) came along and we chatted for a few more minutes before I had to go.

I agree, the heat wasn't very nice.

300 ponies + AWD definitely have a huge advantage over all the others. Damn STi's. Oh yeah, that Toyota Camry with the steel wheels look out of place among the rest of the cars.

 

It was my second time out and I'm still learning. My best time was an 85.3 which is about middle of the pack. The best time was Alan (the guy who designed the course coincidentally) with a 73.3 in his STI.

Ray was an extremely close second with a 73.4 in his IS300. That just goes to show that out there it isn't just about horsepower. It's definitely more about the driver and having a very well balanced car.

I'm certainly not driving my car up to it's potential, but I'm slowly pushing it as I get more comfortable. I highly recommend that everyone try it at least once.

It was a fun albeit somewhat confusing and complicated track, but I started to get it down by my third run. Problem is that by the time you learn the track the day is over and the track gets torn down.

 

Oh and thanks for coming out guys. I appreciate it. I wish that I would have been running later so I could have hung out for a minute.

 

Any idea what the RX8 was running? The drivers of that 8 are 2 of the better drivers from San Deigo region. Jason has brought his Miata out before and with just tires and ran at the top of our region multiple times and his wife Jennifer is a national champion. They should do very well in BS this year with the 2 top ex BS cars (the s2k and boxster) being moved up to AS.

Here's a little something to remember about autocrossing. Every autocross course is almost the same but rearranged. Every autocross course is made of the same elements (slalom, chicago box, offset gates, sweepers, etc.) the only thing is at every event they are in a different order. Once you learn how to drive each element all you really do is remember the order of the elements and the direction you need to start on some of them and it'll be much easier to start the day off faster. The other thing is as you attack one element remember to look ahead for the next one as the way you setup in one can help you setup for the next. Remember your car will almost always follow where your looking.

After a couple more events if you really want to get faster I'd highly reccomend checking out an evolution autocross school. Their whole instructor staff is national champs or people who have consistantly placed really high at nationals.

The phase 1 school teaches you all about looking ahead and what to look for when your looking ahead. Plus you get a ton of seat time. I took phase 1 a couple monthes back in Cali and I got almost 20 runs in myself and both instructors took 3-4 runs each in my car. Not only did they have times for each run they also had sector times to show how fast you were in each element.
I've been autocrossing since 2001 and it was still beneficial for me to go.
If you want I can give you the email address for the guy who arranges the cali ones and he'll put you on his schools mailing list.
They should have one in Tucson in Oct, I'm gonna try to get to that one and attend phase 2.

Also if you haven't bought a cg-lock from JP yet you should. They do a kickass job of holding you in your seat if you don't have a harness.

I was working when the RX8 guy was running so I couldn't really see his times, but he was definitely fast. I didn't see him make a single mistake. He was definitely smooth and clean. His wife(?) was also pretty good. We'll have to wait until they post results to see what he ran.

The track was actually kinda difficult. Nearly a third of the runs when I was working were DNF for people missing gates and misreading turns. I get what you're saying about the same elements being in every track though. I'll definitely look into taking lessons.

 

I agree. It's like a painter with a brush (or insert your own analogy here). It's with the painter's know-how on using the brush and make a work of art.

 

I found you guys. It was a fun track.

Ty, now you get to relearn how hard you can turn and brake. It'll take a little to get used to.

I think Jason (nat. champ)got a 72.0 or 71.8 (not sure if it was clean)in the RX-8. Marvin cranked out a 72.8 in the lingenfelter vette. Allon got a 73.2 in his STi. Arron got a 73.0 in his. I ran a 73.3 in the IS.

This is all a learning experience for me, so my times don't really get me down. If I am still 12 seconds behind you guys by this time next year though I may be a little disappointed.
