The driver is the most importance.

Yup they can easily get away from a Z , especially if the driver doesnt have a clue in what he's doing.

I love this post! I've got a Z (Z32) and a Mazdaspeed3. I've been around and around with the Mazda guys. The car is fast and fun but it's hardly a drag machine. It's a front wheel drive wagon!

what do those Mazdas have anyway?
How can a CAI be such a huge mod. From what I've seen its pretty much a waste, even on a 300hp V6. oh wow, maybe 6hp at the wheels...

They were probably racing some blonde driving her heavy 350Z vert with an auto while she chats on the phone about when her dog is ready to be picked up from the salon.

one thing to remember is... far easier to get power out of a OEM turboed engine than a high compression NA engine.

Ask any DSM guy. FWD or AWD...

granted the Mazdaspeed3 is fwd, it doesn't mean the vehicle is incapable of running you at a drag strip or a track. FWD car, properly set up and driven, can issue a beating just as well as a RWD car.

Just don't let the ego and holier-than-thou attitudes get you in a situation where you think you got a race won before it even starts...

That's why I asked what they have. I had no idea they were turbo. I don't really care enough to research anyway...

all mazdaspeed cars are turbo. but doesnt mean they are using strong internals so tehy may not have that much potential. they are still a wagon/turd. they need a mazdaspeed mx-5 (rwd and tiny) or mazdaspeed6 (awd turbo)

except the Mazdaspeed3 is faster than both.

M3 (mazdaspeed3) = 263hp/280tq, 3180lbs -- 12.09lbs per hp, 11.35lbs per ft-lb of tq
M6 (mazdaspeed6) = 274hp/280tq, 3589lbs -- 13.09lbs per hp, 12.81lbs per ft-lb of tq
MM (mazdaspeed miata) = 178hp/166tq, 2529lbs -- 14.20lbs per hp, 15.23lbs per ft-lb of tq

350z = 287hp/274tq, 3339lbs -- 11.63lbs per hp, 12.18lbs per ft-lb of tq

So, it's really a driver's race. Granted, the 350z should run a M3 around a race track stock for stock, but at the drag strip... it's close. especially when the M3 is only pulling along .4lbs more per hp, BUT, 8lbs LESS per ft-lb of tq.

If the M3 is a turd, the 350z isn't exactly stellar. The numbers don't lie. can't dispute facts.

then, you add in a DP to the M3... and you've eliminated that HP advantage the Z has. add a set of sways, some good tires, and the handling advantage shifts to the M3 as well.

Sometimes, there are just better performing cars. Do they fit what you want in a car? Not always... the M3 is an ugly looking wagon... much rather have a G35 coupe, even if it's on par with the M3 in performance. The same how a Srt4 with few mods is potent, but i'd never own one.

ps. nice video of you beating a Mazdaspeed Protege. that thing stock had less hp than a toaster set to "burnt". at 170hp, it had less than the MM, and weighed nearly 2900lbs. Like me posting a video about my CBR beating a bus.

With equal drivers, the MS6 should be quicker in the 1/8th than the MS3. By the end of the 1/4, the MS3 might be catching up though. AWD puts the power down better than FWD.

I would say maybe to 60mph... 400lbs is a steep handicap, regardless of AWD or not.

the M6 should net 2.0 in the 60s without much effort, while the M3 should be able to put down 2.2s with some finesse....

but, after the launch, the 11hp isn't enough maintain a lead for a 1/4mi to overcome the extra 400lbs. they say for every 100lbs it's worth 10hp in a 1/4... if that's the case, the M3 has a 30hp advantage.
